Summer Gem Care: By The Water

Whether it be at the beach or by the pool there are some key rules to follow to ensure the quality of your jewellery is maintained throughout the summer!

Jewellery at the beach

Beach Care

Nothing makes it feel more like summer than a day at the beach! Before heading to the sandy shore consider the following for your jewellery:

- Sand can be corrosive; although precious metals, such as gold, can withstand exposure to sand, certain gemstones that are softer and more fragile can be scratched by sand particles (pearls and opals are examples of soft gems).

- Cold Water can cause fingers and hands to shrink which can make a well fitting ring become loose very quickly, this could land your beloved jewels washed away with the waves.

- Tanning Oil, Sunscreen and Sweat can also cause jewellery to loosen and slip off easily.

Pool Side Care

Hanging by the pool is another summertime staple; keep the following ideas in mind when hitting the poolside and also take note of some of the tips above that can also relate to poolside gem care.

- Chlorine can have a negative effect on a lot of your favourite pieces. It will turn silver jewellery black and can also discolour metals such as yellow gold, white gold and rose gold.

Overtime chlorine can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones which makes it important to keep your genuine gems away from chlorine if possible.
