Originally titled Backes & Strauss, is the world's oldest diamond company, dating back to 1789. One of the co-founders, Georg Carl Backes was a successful goldsmith in the city of Hanau, Germany. His company at the time, Backes & Co. had become so successful, he has sent his son to London, England to open a new office. After Georg died, his son carried on trading and manufacturing diamond jewellery. In 1856, the company employed an office boy by the name of Max Strauss. Ten years later, Max was promoted to Town Traveler and agent, and fifteen years later he was managing J.F. Backes & Co. In 1873, the company began trading and Backes & Strauss. In 2004, the company had launched the Max Strauss Signature Collection in Canada, to honor one of the two founding fathers. The Max Strauss Signature collection consists of beautiful bridal, anniversary, and gents bands as well as earrings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces.
